Collect statistical data from office and field sources, prepare the same for publication, weather through the different administrative records or by conducting comprehensive or sample field surveys.

Formulate plans and technical designs for agreed upon surveys in accordance with the programme approved by the minister.

Conduct the general population census at the specified date and through following the procedures stipulated by the statistical law.

Work towards unifying the statistical concepts, terminologies and classifications applied by the different units in the Sultanate and to determine their definitions in a manner compatible with local conditions, on one hand and the Arab and international recommendations on the other.

Work toward the development of statistical methods and methodologies, upgrade the capabilities of the employees to raise the level of performance in statistical work and achieve the maximum accuracy of data collected.

Coordinate the functions carried out by the General Directorate and the similar functions that are carried out by other units, whether inside or outside the Ministry to raise the unifying efforts and avoiding duplication in the work.

Work towards ensuring the follow up of statistical data from administrative sources in a regularly manner, according to determined time period with close cooperation and coordination with different producer units of these data.

Represent the Sultanate locally and overseas in meeting and seminars held on the issues which fall within functions.
